The fur guide

How to collect a little lock of fur.

It takes about two minutes, and your best friend will barely notice. No scissors, no fuss, no stress.

About a pinch of fur, roughly the size of a coin

How much do I need?

Less than you think. About a pinch, roughly the size of a coin. That is genuinely all it takes to fill the window. If you gather a little extra, that is fine too. We would rather you have a spare than have to ask twice.

Even a small amount of fur fills the window beautifully

A little really is plenty

Even a small, soft amount sits beautifully behind the window. Packing it too tightly flattens the texture and hides the colour. Loose and light looks best.

How to collect it, gently

  1. 1Wait for a calm moment. During a normal cuddle or a lazy evening on the sofa is perfect.
  2. 2Use a soft brush or a slicker brush. Brush the way you always do, along the back or the ruff where the coat is thickest.
  3. 3Lift the loose fur from the brush. That is your lock. It is already the softest fur they have, and they will not miss a single strand.
  4. 4Please do not use scissors on a wriggling pet. Brushing is safer, kinder, and honestly gives a nicer result.

If your companion has short hair, or is a cat, brushing still works. Go slowly, and a slightly damp hand can help gather the finer strands.

How the fur sits behind the clear window of the Pawch

How it goes into the window

Your Pawch arrives with the window ready. Open the snap tab, lay the fur gently inside so it fans out a little, and press the tab closed. It holds. That is the whole thing.

Keeping it safe until your Pawch arrives

A small paper envelope or a little fold of tissue is perfect. Keep it somewhere dry and out of the way. Fur keeps indefinitely, so there is no rush at all.

If they are no longer with you

Take your time. There is no deadline here, and nothing about this needs to happen today. If you have kept a lock already, it will be exactly right. If you would like help, write to us at woof@pawch.co and a real person will answer.
